Help with start questions

daniel ratzabi

i just started to use SWMM and i have some question, im useing Civil and Autocad daily, and im confused about where i can save time and where i need to do all menually. lets say i already have my pipe network and surface in Civil,

  1. Which data should be entered manually and which data should the software receive from the outside? do i have to place manually each Subcatchment? or i can use Civil data for that?
  2. there is no Undo button?
  3. i thought that i can place my Civil surface and SWMM will take the elevetion from the surface and it will know where the area water goes, same thing with my Pipe network, SWMM cant get the IL etc... from there? and cept from some settings in SWMM ill get the final result?

Are you using some sort of connection between Civil 3D and SWMM? Export from Civil? Can you be a bit more extensive in your Workflow?

daniel ratzabi

first of all, i just started to use SWMM so idk mucj about that and im still searching the benefit of that.

since i just started, my workflow for now is to take an existing project from Civil/Autocad, and check the simulation on SWMM if everything works, and visualized the project. cos i already has the project and all the data on Civil. so this is important not to do double work and start typing all the data in SWMM. i know there will be some data to type, YES. but atleast not all

  1. I managed to convert the PIPE NETWORK with data to SWMM idk if it has all the data but in a afirst look it looks nice.

2, i exported ini file from CIVIL and manage to open it with SWMM as open project.

*but i didnt see how to import to SWMM lets say an update, or more than 1 file, but since i used the "file" -> "open" option, it will start a new project, and didnt add it to existing project.

  1. about the Subcatchment i dont want to draw them one by one, i think it will take me a long time to create them with slope etc... i saw in the Manual "Map Data Section" this is interesting.
[Polygons]
;;Subcatchment X-Coord Y-Coord
 S1 3708.61 8543.05
 S1 4834.44 7019.87
 S1 3675.50 4834.44
< additional vertices not listed >
 S2 6523.18 8079.47
 S2 8112.58 8841.06

is this uploading data from a text file? cos i didnt see any option to upload text file to SWMM and we can use lisp to extract an area with slope etc... to SWMM as Subcatchment

  1. one of the major problems for me is that idk "YET" how to upload to SWMM Unplanned area with hights, or planned area, cos just the idea of placing manually each elevation of roof top, it will take me hours/days
  2. i saw the lisp that takes a project from CAD and create cords file to SWMM backround, this is great. if there is any lisps i can use, that would be nice.

A simple question to ask for my clarification. You are modifying SWMM5 to read an exported Civil3D project? Is Neyton and Daniel working together or is this a class project with even other participants.

daniel ratzabi

we r not working together and this is not a class project, Im a CAD manager,
and as i said, im trying to think of working with SWMM but i dont know if this program is answering our expectation.

for our first step in SWMM to test it, i want to know how it works and get as much as i can in automate.

cept from manually typing that take a lot of time.

Neyton Luiz Dalle Molle

I developed an "almost" complete solution for working with SWMM directly in Civil 3D:https://tbn2net.com/SOLIDOS It can import/export INP files from SWMM and EPANET, in addition to using their engine for simulation, directly in Civil 3D

Keith Hume

With Civil3D, you should/may also have Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis. This software uses the Civil3D Pipe network to create a SWMM model. It also can be used to import GIS data into the SWMM model. The software has the SWMM engine built in but it will likely not be the same version as you are running in EPA SWMM. I've often used it to create EPA SWMM models from Civil3D Pipe networks and/or GIS data by exporting out the model as an .inp file. Not sure if this helps but you may want to check it out if it is available to you.

daniel ratzabi

Keith - how to export GIS data to SWMM ? in SWMM i saw that i can open only one inp file. so i always need to get all ready in civil and export it ones to SWMM? by GIS data u mean surfaces and elevation ?

Robert Dickinson

Use Google and search for "civil 3d to ssa" and you will see how to connect Civil 3D to SSA and from SSA to SWMM5 (as Keith Hume mentions). Hopefully, this helps you.

Keith Hume

As Robert mentioned, I have used AutoCAD Storm and Sanitary Analysis (SSA) software to import GIS into SWMM models. Within SSA, go to File>Import>GIS Import... to open the GIS import wizard. GIS attributes can be mapped to SWMM fields (such as diameter, length, etc.). There are 3 import steps (Pipes, Junctions, Subbasins), not all of which need to be used.
